Hey Bike Rockers –
There’s a fun looking bike event on Sat. in Fairfax, Biketoberfest: http://www.biketoberfest2008.org/
Lots of nice, local handmade bikes, beer and music. That’s the good life, right there.

Wonder what happened to the environmentalists sailing to Hawaii on a raft made of 15000 discarded plastic bottles? Well, they dodged hurricanes, collected ocean samples, found plastic in the bellies of fish they caught for food, and managed to meet up with their friend Roz Savage, a fellow environmentalist rowing a motorless craft to Hawaii. Their route to the 808 state, after some initial windless drifting from LA, basically looks like a straight line. One might think, “Hmm, not bad, maybe I should build a raft out of plastic bottles.” And there would certainly be no shortage of bottles for you to try it out, which is precisely the idea behind the Junk’s voyage. The crew of the Junk and their LA-based support team certainly raised my personal awareness of plastic consumption with their mission and blog. I’ve tried experiments like zero plastic bag shopping trips and have remembered to bring my own water bottle in my messenger bag.
The crew of the Junk are planning a bike trip from Vancouver to Mexico to continue to spread the word about their work. And they’re looking into Rock the Bike’s Soul Cycle music systems to be able to host social rides and speak through the microphone at their events.
And here are a couple more links while we’re on this topic:

I’m sorry, we really should have told you sooner. Both the Down Low Glow and the 6-Spd Mundo are unfortunately out of stock.
It seems that whenever I tell friends in casual conversations that we’re backordered on the Down Low Glow, they usually congratulate me as if this is somehow great news for Rock the Bike. But I wish we could get all of our current orders out tomorrow. It’s just that we are unfortunately operating on a very limited stock of our rechargeable batteries. More are on the way, but by sea.
On the plus side, a limited by-air shipment will be arriving soon. And we are aiming to fill DLG orders placed now in time for Halloween. We will even offer free shipping to those who place an order before the 14th, if you do not receive your DLG by Halloween (US only offer).
Mundos are due in early November. The Mundo has simply been selling faster than we have anticipated. We’re fortunate that more Mundos are already on a boat approaching the Panama Canal, but we’re unfortunate that only 75 are on that boat. If you want one before Spring 2009, please order soon so that we can hold yours.
With such critical, mainline items out of stock, you may be wondering, what’s in stock?
The bright red “Ziegelrot” single-speed Mundo. Perfect for flatter terrains. Simple, strong, fun to ride, cheerful. We also have cool upgrades that fit the bright red Single Speed Mundo perfectly, like the yellow and red “Hazarea” Sweetskinz tires seen on our shop Mundo.
For Bay Area folks, please come to our Berkeley Workshop to test-ride and purchase fully-built Single Speed Mundos.
Bike Blenders. Both Fender Blender X and Fender Blender Universale (FBU, formerly B3 Mini) are in stock and shipping. Bike Blenders bring people together around bikes and fruit. What could be better? A great tool for growing the bike movement, teaching kids about healthy eating, and drawing a crowd at festivals.
Xtracycle FreeRadicals (and expert installations for Bay Area folks).
The Soul Cycle “In The Pocket” Head Unit. Our simplest Mobile Audio System.
And other good stuff like Righteous Kickstands, Incredibells, Sweetskinz, all good stuff.
We are hustling to get the Down Low Glow and Mundo 6-Speeds back in stock. We’ll keep you up to date.
When will my credit card be charged? Orders placed online will have their cards charged at the time of purchase. Orders placed over the phone will have their cards charged within a few days of shipping.
Fossil Fool, the Bike Rapper, and drummer Joel Elrod perform while cruising the streets of the Mission District in San Francisco at the Bicycle Music Festival held in June, 2008. Joel keeps the beat on a SPDS drum machine mounted on the LiveOnBike rig, a modified Mundo Cargo Bike, whose signal is sent wirelessly by a Shure bodypack microphone to the Choprical Fish (Fossil Fool’s bike) and then wirelessly amplified by two other Soul Cycles rolling alongside.

Just announced: Mos Def will be performing live with SF’s Realistic Orchestra backing him up!

MC’s in the know know that Fossil Fool, the bike rapper, doesn’t hog the mic when the real talent rolls in. I give props and pedal power. Today, as the Mos Def show lets out, I’ll be bringing the new Rock the Bike pedal power gear and hosting a session with the most talented MC’s of the Bay Area, who will almost certainly be attending the free Mos Def show.
I wish I could lead a cruiser ride to the event, but I’m working a cool event in the sunset district for Friends of the Urban Forest. Friend Adam A. is getting up at 6:30 to help me get the gear to the event. If any SF Cruiser wants to lead folks to the concert, please post a comment below.

There’s some great free live music happening this Saturday, the 18th. After the concert, meet up with the other SF Cruisers and other bike people for an afternoon cruise, probably ending up close to sunset in the Mission District. The concert ends at 6PM. Other highlights: Rock the Bike will host a Human Powered MC Freestyle battle after the concert with rappers from the Jazz Mafia crew and other Bay Area MC’s in attendance.
Please note, you have to print a voucher by answering a brief survey. http://www.megsf.com/
Note, we’re looking for an SF Cruiser or two to lead a cruise from the Mission District and other locales to the event. I’ll be coming from the sunset, where Rock the Bike will be pedal powering a Friends of the Urban Forest event earlier in the day.
