Aloha Single Speeders kick A.S.S

Oct 19, 2006Posted by

Aloha Single Speeders kick A.S.S.: I hope that google can find Rock the Bike and connect us with the Aloha Single Speeders of Honolulu. I saw this SWEET Bianchi Fixie @ Ala Moana Shopping Center next to the Crocs booth. I started talking to the rider of this dope fixie and he told me about his crew the Aloha Single Speeders, a seemingly die hard group of Fixie Riders that roll 4000 miles away from the streets of San Francisco! Anyway we talked about riding in Hawaii and his crew usually leads the protests and marches they have in Honolulu. So I shot this pic for my buddy Elemence (a hard core Fixie Fan) and all you Fixie Riders out there. Keep on rolling from HI to NYC and everywhere in between! ALOHA SINGLE SPEEDERS- ROCK THE BIKE!!

I hope that google can find Rock the Bike and connect us with the Aloha Single Speeders of Honolulu.

Honolulu Cruising

Oct 18, 2006Posted by

Greetings from the cruising streets of Honolulu, Hawaii!! I got into town and went directly to the bike shop to pick up a bike. I chose to purchase a bike instead of renting because my friend that lives on the island doesn’t own his own bike so i ended up giving it to him after I return to the mainland. After checking out a Eki Cyclery, and “the Bike Shop” on Bretania Ave I ended up at the dreaded Wal-Mart to get the Kulani Envy Green 7 speed 26″ cruiser. Suprisingly a nice bike! The hills in town were not very steep so climbing was pretty easy. Ala Moana beach park has plenty of beach side paths crossing over a creek and a VERY nice park to see plenty of people BBQing, playing Ukulele, jogging, walking and just hanging out. Just a beautiful Tropical Hawaiian Day! The night rides were even more fun. Traffic was slow as we cruised down Kalkaua Avenue enjoying the tradewinds and the warm night air. IF or WHEN you get out to Hawaii, DEFINITELY rent a bike and cruise around town. YOU WILL ENJOY IT!!

Public Space

What’s your definition of public space? When does public space end?

Do you want this?

Street signs.

Inspiring public dance performance on the side of a building.

Oct 15, 2006Posted by

You really have to experience this type of thing in person, but here’s a taste. Dancers from Flyaway Productions in San Francisco, under director Jo Kreiter, transformed a building into a stage.

Inspiring dance on the side of a building.Inspiring dance on the side of a building.

Rigged with climbing harnesses and lit up brilliantly with stage lighting, they flipped and danced to the delight of spectators below. Please see my Flickr slideshow and YouTube video for more of this inspiring performance.

It was truly the most amazing public piece of art I’ve seen in a long time.

Let’s Greenwash this city

Oct 15, 2006Posted by

Greenwashing is this guy.

Why, when suggesting that riding a bicycle is an important part of building a ‘greener’ city, does PG&E pick a recumbent bike with a big flag sticking out the back? Why not an everyman’s bike that readers will see and say to themselves, “Oh yeah, I could do that.”

Why is he all alone, trying to stay between the MUNI rails, with a car about to pass him on the right? Isn’t this the exact situation that my friends have in mind when they say “I don’t feel comfortable biking in the city”?

Why do they say “Green is this guy”? They might as well write “Green is that guy”. ‘This guy’ puts him at a distance from us, the mainstream reader.

What if, instead, PG&E chose a younger, sexier — no offense — model, maybe a woman, on a stylish city bike, in one of the bike lanes that SFBC has fought so hard for, with three other bikers flanking her in the background (as is often the case on Market St. in the morning hours)? Instead of saying “Green is this guy,” they could personalize it by saying “Green is Karen Jones”.

If you’ve seen “Who Killed the Electric Car?” you know that, just because a company advertises a product, doesn’t mean that they necessarily want people to buy the product. In the case of the electric car, there’s strong evidence that GM and Toyota wanted to kill their electric car programs and were only advertising them to fulfill the legal requirement in California.

In the case of PG&E’s Let’s Green This City campaign, they are advertising individual action such as bicycle riding, but obviously not doing it in the most persuasive way they could.

Counter PG&E’s PR

Hey! I am part of a group of people that set up a website with a lot of facts that counter PG&E’s deceptive greenwashing campaign. It’s called letsgreenwashthiscity.org, so I thought that you might enjoy it!

here’s a couple of facts from the site:

PG&E owns 0% solar and 2% wind facilities

PG&E’s ClimateSmart program is a bandage solution to climate change, it is a consumptive response to climate change (it has customers pay to plant trees to offset their emissions) and does nothing to address the root cause of global warming. Also, their stated goal for this program is a mere 5%!

go to letsgreenwashthiscity.org to read more.

thanks!

What’s Your Locking Style?

Do you have a locking style? How you lock the bike may affect how you Rock the Bike. Here’s one that caught my eye recently:

Bike locked to trash can in front of Metreon

Close-up bike on trash can.: Guess he's not worried about the paint job.

Cruiser rides are a lot of fun.

Is that his full time job?

Oct 3, 2006Posted by

I saw the Muscle Car guy again! This time in down town San Francisco. I heard him first about 3 blocks away. I thought it was a union protest or something. Then as I got closer I heard “We are at War!” and I knew it was him, and there he was! Is this is full time job? It was a Monday morning… Weird..
