Pumpkin Pie Smoothie Recipe

pumpkin-pie-smoothie

We served Pumpkin Pie Smoothies at Berkeley Sunday Streets. This is a great seasonal treat for the fall and requires very little cooler space at an event.

In your pitcher add:

1 banana
1 cup pumpkin puree
1 cup vanilla yogurt
2 tbsp honey
1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Top with 1 cup ice and place on your bike blender. Blend until smooth and creamy. Pour into a cup and enjoy!

Pro Tip: Bring a can opener with you to the event, or buy pumpkin puree in a carton.

“We are enjoying the bike and tried a few more seasonal recipes today.  The Pumpkin Smoothies were a bit hit for sure!”

Bike Blender Impacts Communities with New Perspective on Healthy Eating

Bike Blender Impacts Communities with New Perspective on Healthy Eating

My name is Jeremi, I am the Family Market Coordinator at the Capital Area Food Bank located in Washington, DC. My role at the food bank is to help supply food to schools that are in high-need, and under-served areas around the DC, MD, and VA regions. I really enjoy what I do, especially knowing that a hungry child may have an extra meal or two because of the generous donations of others.

One thing we are trying to implement this year into the program is educating those we serve in areas of nutrition, and healthy eating. A fun way to help teach students and families about these topics is with our brand new Rock the Bike Smoothie Blender, also known as “Green Machine” or “Sweet Pea” because of the vibrant color! The bike will travel with me to several of my school sites, that host these emergency food pantries, periodically throughout the year and will be used as an educational tool as well as an exciting way to engage the students and the families. That is me in the picture below powering a smoothie for our regular food pantry agencies that wake up early in the morning to come pick up food from us to distribute to the community throughout the day. What better way to start the morning, right? We are very excited about our new toy that will have an impact on our communities perspective on eating healthy! Thank you!Capital Area Food Bank

Smoothie Recipe: Paradise Punch

Smoothie Recipe: Paradise Punch

Paradise Punch is very popular flavor at many of our bike blending events. When someone has their first sip they typically make a statement along the lines of, “Wow, now all I need is a hammock!” It’s probably because the flavor is so refreshing and slightly reminiscent of a Piña Colada that it makes you wanna lay in the sun and enjoy the world around you. Now you can bring more smiles to faces with this refreshing treat.

Ingredients:

2/3 cup frozen pineapple
1 cup frozen mango
1 ripe banana
1/2 cup yogurt (Greek or regular)
orange juice
ice

Ingredients for a 48-oz High Performance Pitcher:

1/2 cup yogurt
2 bananas
2 cups mango
1 cup pineapple
2 1/2 cups orange juice

Prep It In Your Pitcher:

1. Peel your banana/s and place in the bottom of your pitcher

2. Add yogurt

3. Scoop in frozen pineapple and mango

4. Top with roughly 1 cup of ice (you may want to use less).

5. Fill up the pitcher with OJ until it tops the ice (this is roughly 16-24 oz. of juice).

6. Cover with the lid and pop onto your bike blender! Blend until smooth (roughly 30-60 seconds depending on how hard you pedal).

Blender Bike & Spin Art Cycling: Spinning Toward a New Type of Celebration

MONTE VISTA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL | ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO

Like many schools, Monte Vista Elementary School depends on fundraisers throughout the year to maintain special programs and student activities. Cake Walks, cookie dough sales and a BBQ with typical, unhealthy fare were some of the school’s most popular fundraisers. Over the past few years, the school’s wellness council decided that one of their main goals was to replace the unhealthy fundraising activities with more active and healthier alternatives. When a parent brought forward the idea of the “Blender Bike,” the council was thrilled.

With funds from a national Safe Routes to School grant, they purchased the bike blender attachment from a company called Rock the Bike. A local nonprofit donated the bike and they were ready to ride!

The wellness council researched and purchased the blender attachment, keeps the schedule and makes sure it is available to teachers and for fundraisers. The bike has provided an opportunity to teach kids how to make healthy snacks that meet the Alliance Guidelines, to keep students physically active by using the bike in classes (as a reward and a learning tool) and to have a healthy fundraiser by selling small amounts of the smoothies or chances to ride the bike at school events.

Physical Education teacher Paula Jackson said that the bike has been a great addition to the school. “Students are associating riding a bike with healthy fun, they have learned how to make a healthy snack and the school has a mobile fundraiser!” She goes on to say that the bike also offers an alternative to parents who want to bring something healthier in for birthday celebrations. They can bring the fruit, juice and yogurt to the classroom and the students ride the bike to make the smoothies. Students will then share a “birthday toast” with the fruit smoothie. They have even used it at a staff luncheon.

In addition to the Bike Blender attachment, the SRTS grant was used to purchase a Spin Art attachment for the bicycle from the same company. With the Spin Art attachment, one student rides, another squirts the paint, and a piece of art has been created with human energy and teamwork. And by charging for the privilege of painting and riding, the wellness council now has a double fundraiser activity! At a recent school wide event, the Blender & Spin Art Bike was a huge hit with children and adults.

The Blender & Spin Art Bike complements the school’s vast array of now healthier fundraisers, such as the PTA Fall BBQ and Health Fair where soda and unhealthy food items have been swapped with water, fresh vegetables, whole grain breads, veggie burger options and physical activity opportunities like a mobile climbing wall. With cooperation from the school’s PTA, roller skating and swimming parties have replaced the cookie dough sales. The popular Art-n-Dessert Night now boasts more fresh fruit than brownies, and the most popular and always successful Jog-a-Thon continues to bring in around $20,000 per year.

Phat Beets uses FBU at Farmers Market to promote healthy eating habits

Phat Beets uses FBU at Farmers Market to promote healthy eating habits

Phat Beets Produce works to connect small, marginalized farmers to urban communities through farmers market, CSAs, and gardens.  The pedal powered smoothie bike is for our youth and community based free farm stands in North Oakland.  We heard about the smoothie bike from OBUGS.  We are using funds from Farmers Market Consortium group to promote consumption of fruits and veggies.  Phat Beets Produce is not part of the local bike community, but some of us ride bikes.  We have an interest in any pedal powered kitchen equipment. The coolest thing we heard about was HOT BIKE!

Here they are using their Fender Blender Universale at an event. Keep up the great work, Phat Beets!
